STHS Excel-erate Program

“South Tahoe High School is thrilled to introduce the STHS Excel-erate Program, a transformative initiative designed to empower high-potential first-generation students on their path to college success ”

— Kim Ilvento, STHS College and Career Counselor

Marcella Foundation support will propel our shared commitment to create a more equitable education landscape at South Tahoe High School

Excel-erate is more than just a program, it's a journey of growth, support, and achievement. At STHS, we understand the unique challenges faced by first-generation students. That's why we've tailored every aspect of the program to provide personalized guidance, mentorship, resources and opportunities that address these challenges head-on while at the same time helping to remove the barriers that often hinder first-gen students from going to college.

  • Our goal is to see more first-generation students attending and succeeding in four-year colleges and universities

  • Higher A-G completion rates, fueled by enhanced academic skills, improved understanding of the college application process and a newfound confidence that anyone can attend and thrive in college

  • Not only students, but their families too, will gain a deeper understanding of the college application process and will be provided with strong support and guidance

  • A more diverse and equitable college going culture as more of our first generation, low income, and Latinx students apply to and attend 4 Year Colleges and Universities

  • An uplifted community, with students becoming role models, mentors and advocates for education, breaking barriers for generations to come.

By fostering a college-going culture and offering opportunities for educational exploration, we're not only changing individual lives but also shaping the future of our community.

How can you help?

1. Mentorship and Guest Speaking

Community members can offer their time and expertise as mentors or guest speakers, sharing their own educational and career journeys with our students. This exposure to diverse experiences can inspire and motivate our students to strive for excellence

2. Financial Contributions

Financial support from local businesses, organizations, and individuals can help sustain the program, ensuring that our students have access to the resources they need for college preparation.

3. Scholarships and Internships:

Offering scholarships or internships provides direct opportunities for our students to further their education and gain practical experience. These opportunities can be invaluable in shaping their academic and professional paths.

4. Community Partnerships

Collaborating with local colleges, businesses, and non-profit organizations can provide our students with access to workshops, resources, and experiences beyond the classroom, enriching their college going journey

5. Advocacy

Supporting the program through advocacy helps spread awareness about the importance of college access and success for first-generation students. It promotes a culture of support within the community and encourages others to get involved.
